PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY (PDT)
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) with Levulan is a non-invasive treatment used to treat various skin conditions, including actinic keratosis (AK), also known as precancerous lesions, sun damage, and certain types of acne. The therapy combines a topical medication (Levulan, also known as ALA or aminolevulinic acid) with light activation to selectively target and treat damaged skin cells.
How Does PDT with Levulan Work?
- Levulan Application: Levulan, a photosensitizing agent, is applied to the affected area of the skin. This medication is absorbed by abnormal or damaged cells but not by healthy cells.
- Incubation Period: After the Levulan is applied, it needs time to be absorbed by the skin. The incubation period usually lasts between 15-60 minutes, depending on the condition being treated.
- Light Activation: After the incubation, a special light is used to activate the Levulan. This light, typically a blue light or intense pulsed light (IPL), is absorbed by the photosensitizer, triggering a chemical reaction that destroys the abnormal cells while leaving healthy tissue unharmed.

Benefits of PDT with Levulan
Non-invasive
No incisions or needles are required, making it a minimally invasive treatment option.
Targeted Treatment
The treatment is highly targeted, meaning healthy skin is preserved while abnormal or damaged cells are treated.
Long-lasting Results
PDT with Levulan can provide long-lasting improvements in skin appearance, especially for sun damage and actinic keratosis.
Minimal Downtime
Most patients experience minimal recovery time after treatment, with some redness and peeling that generally resolve within a week.

What to Expect During PDT with Levulan
Preparation:
Before the procedure, a consultation with a dermatologist will determine whether PDT with Levulan is the right treatment for your condition.
Procedure Duration:
The entire process typically takes 30-60 minutes. The application of Levulan takes about 15-60 minutes, followed by light activation for around 15 minutes.
Post-Treatment Care:
After treatment, you may experience mild redness, swelling, or peeling in the treated area. This is normal and should subside within a few days to a week.
